COMP_AVG_SUMMARY

This view is designed to facilitate analysis of average compensation levels for employees with similar job titles and responsibilities. Summary data is published for monthly "snapshots" of the UC Berkeley work force. Grouping-category fields are included to allow reporting disaggregated by Control Unit, Division, Department, Discipline/Group, Job Code, Salary Grade, Appointment Type, Employee Relations Code, and Bargaining Unit.

Only a subset of job rows effective on the last day of each calendar month are used to generate the summary counts in this view:

"Raw" and "Weighted" averages are available. Use of weighted averages are strongly recommended for comparative purposes, and are the values displayed on reports published for general use; to generate these averages, each individual's compensation is weighted according to the percentage of time s/he works (so that a half-time job counts as 1/2-job, and a full-time job counts as one job). The formulae used to calculate raw and weighted averages are described in appropriate entries in the full definitions section of the HR-BAIRS Data Dictionary.

Average Compensation is not available (data is not populated in a particular row of the view) unless a minimum number of individuals exist in the sector of the work force the row represents. The minimum threshholds are as follows for averages at the indicated level of the campus hierarchy:

Compensation professionals on the campus strongly recommend against using an average calculated from fewer than ten (10) individual salaries for comparative purposes.

This view is created in two varients, which aggregate summary counts in organizational units (Control Units, Divisions, etc.) differently:

Users with reporting privileges in the Workforce Summary subject area may report on nodes in the campus Organizational Hierarchy for which they have reporting rights, as well as "parents" and "children" of those nodes.

The raw average is based on the total number of job rows summarized, irrespective of how many FTE these rows represent. A minimum number of jobs must be summarized in a row of data in order for this field's value to contain an average (see complete definition for detailed information).

COMP_AVG_RAW_MONTHLY_BASE_AMT

A raw average of monthly pay rates for job summarized in this row of summary view data. The raw average is based on the total number of job rows summarized, irrespective of how many FTE these rows represent. COMP_AVG_WGTD_ANNUAL_BASE_AMT

A weighted average of annual pay rates for job summarized in this row of summary view data. The weighted average uses the sum of FTE represented by the summarized jobs, rather than the raw number of rows. A minimum number of jobs must be summarized in a row of data in order for this field's value to contain an average (see complete definition for detailed information).

COMP_AVG_WGTD_HOURLY_BASE_AMT

A weighted average of houry pay rates for job summarized in this row of summary view data. The weighted average uses the sum of FTE represented by the summarized jobs, rather than the raw number of rows. A minimum number of jobs must be summarized in a row of data in order for this field's value to contain an average (see complete definition for detailed information).

COMP_AVG_WGTD_MONTHLY_BASE_AMT

A weighted average of monthly pay rates for job summarized in this row of summary view data. The weighted average uses the sum of FTE represented by the summarized jobs, rather than the raw number of rows. A minimum number of jobs must be summarized in a row of data in order for this field's value to contain an average (see complete definition for detailed information).
